Overwhelmed by the appearance that RED is so much greater than BLUE?

The Republicans won by a teeny margin, but a huge amount of the country looks RED on every map I've seen on mainstream television and papers.

Here's some better maps. I'm grateful to them because I was starting to get wound up and wanting to make some of my own, and the best I've got is an old McPaint program...
